About the Book

Simple tools. Meaningful change

01

Emotional well-being :

If you have ever tried to schedule with a counselor for the first time, it can take 2 to 3 months to get in, depending on the area. This book can give you a head start and may help you find a place to begin. Being able to try something that might benefit you can help maintain hope and not give up. Many, if not most people have been given messages that they are not worthwhile, that they can’t do anything right or good enough. These messages are often part of mental and emotional health issues.

02

Personal Growth :

Thought provoking ideas and insights are presented to help you on your journey. Sometimes we are blessed with knowing our purpose, and sometimes it is a step of faith to understand that our lives have purpose even when we are not sure what it is. You will be encouraged to accept that your life does have purpose, you are valuable, despite what you have been told or felt about yourself.

03

Communication :

Communication issues involve other people and are foundational to relationships; even those that are not deep such as business relationships. Interactions can benefit when each person improves their skills as a communicator. If you want to improve your communication skills, the place to start is improving your listening. Some issues need to be addressed directly with a therapist.

04

Couples :

On a personal note, my wife and I have been married 21 years as of this writing. She made a comment the other day that encouraged me saying that we made it together over 20 years and still like each other. We practice the concepts and behaviors presented in this book. Marriage is a committed, long-term relationship and takes a lot of forgiveness and patience since both of you married imperfect people. You can’t change someone else, but you can effect change in the relationship by something you bring.

05

Relationships :

With any relationship people accidentally hurt or offend each other. If someone is hurting or offending you on purpose it is a different matter. You need to decide how important it is to you to keep that relationship or if it is one that you need to let go. If you want to keep the relationship you need to learn how to get unstuck emotionally and detach from those hurts or offenses.

06

Christians :

Anyone can benefit from what is written in these pages. Those who find their faith valuable to them have an understanding that along with our mind, emotions, behaviors, and senses, there is a spiritual realm that many people ignore or deny. Those who have a faith in Jesus will be especially encouraged. If you do not share this faith, please do not be offended by the references to Christianity.

The Guidance for every walk of life.

01

Everyday people :

Many people have come into therapy and stated that they just want to be happy. We have an idea of what will make us happy, so we try that. When what we do doesn’t work, we are left confused and dismayed. The foundation of happiness and even our identity, who we are as a person begins inside of us, in our thoughts which influence our behaviors and emotions. A few thoughts about addiction are included.

02

Christians :

Part of spiritual maturity is to recognize that you are dependent on God. That is a very counter cultural way to think. Many people are either fiercely independent and insist on doing things their way, or they go to the other extreme and become very dependent on someone else to take care of them. Dependence on God allows you to accomplish your very best knowing you are operating within God’s will without as much interfering sin; or having the burden of success or failure being entirely on your shoulders.

03

Couples :

Couples often wonder how their relationship got here, and what happened to the person I once loved so much. Marriages fall apart when people blame each other for their unhappiness, or they become so focused on other areas of life such as pouring their lives into their children, trying to achieve financial goals by working a lot, or other real concerns; and neglect their marriage. If both of you want it to work, there is hope of restoration no matter what shape your marriage is in.

04

Counselors :

Mental health professionals will find validation for the techniques they are using, techniques they can add to their practice, and occasionally find opportunity to challenge and clarify their thinking. You may find a different approach that could help your clients when they are stuck.
